Building Inspections

The Building Department endeavors to provide quality building inspections for new construction and alterations to existing buildings in a timely manner.  Generally county inspectors are able to respond to inspection requests within two business days.  Call (757) 678-0445 to schedule an inspection [24 hours a day].

Inspections are required for all work regulated by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, which can be downloaded from www.vbcoa.org.

Typically, the following inspections are required for new construction and alterations, where applicable.

  • Footings – before concrete is poured
  • Foundation Walls – before structure is placed on foundation
  • Slabs – before slab is poured
  • Draintile (if required) – before backfilling
  • Rough-in plumbing – must have water or air test on supply and waste piping
  • Rough-in gas – must have air test on all gas lines
  • Rough-in electric – Call (757) 665-6260 to schedule.  Electrical inspections performed only two days a week by private inspector under agreement with the County.
  • Framing – after rough–in electric
  • Insulation – before covering insulation
  • Final Electric, Mechanical, Plumbing and Building
Other inspections may be required for special projects.
