How do I apply for a vacancy?

A separate Northampton County application is required for each announced vacancy by 5 p.m. on the deadline date. Position title and department location must be written on each application. Resumes cannot substitute the Northampton County Employment Application.

Zoning and Code Compliance Inspector

Northampton County is accepting applications for a full time Zoning and Code Compliance Inspector. The essential function of this position is to enforce County Code of Ordinances. The position is responsible for having a full understanding of the County zoning and codes and their intent so as to reasonable apply the standards to situations that arise from those proactively seeking permits for work and those who may have violated laws. This includes the inspections and enforcement under direction of the Deputy Zoning Administrator/ Environmental Specialist for implementation of law related to: zoning, wetlands, agricultural best management practices, septic system pump –out, grass complaints, abandoned and inoperable vehicles, dangerous structures and open dumps.

Requires high school diploma or GED and the equivalent of one year of college or specialized vocational training in land surveying, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, planning, civil engineering, or other related field or adequate relevant experience and certifications. Requires valid Virginia Driver’s License
Certified Stormwater Management Program Inspector desired within two (2) years of employment
Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Program Inspector desired within two (2) years of employment

Excellent communication skills are essential. The minimum salary for this position is $38274.48 plus benefits.

Senior Planner
Northampton County, Virginia

Northampton County is accepting applications for the full-time position of Senior Planner. This position is to provide planning and technical support for the Planning, Permitting and Enforcement Department and various boards and committees. This position is responsible for assisting with planning, policy analysis, regulation enforcement, technical research and support site/plan review, customer service and related records and reports. Serves as primary staff support for the Planning Commission; oversees the creation and production of the agendas for Planning Commission meetings, executes and communicates all decisions or votes of the Planning Commission. Oversees staff in the acceptance and processing of applications for any planning-related approvals such as; special use permits, zoning clearances, zoning test amendments and map amendments. This position coordinates the review and updates of the Comprehensive Plan as stated by the Code of Virginia.

Serves as principal GIS Coordinator which duties include: compiles and integrates cartographic data from a wide variety of sources for inclusion in GIS database, manage data layers for Northampton County: create maps and conduct analysis at the request of the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Administration or any other department; maintain the official zoning map; serve as the primary coordinator with the County’s outside vendor in maintaining the maps for public access on the County website; create and print maps for the public at their request.

Serves as Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) Administrator which duties include; schedule and prepare agenda for quarterly PDR meetings, take minutes at meetings; assist in writing grants, coordinating easement review, assist property owners with applications, coordinate review and ranking of applications pursuant to Board policy.

Serves as Enterprise Zone primary coordinator with the Deputy County Administrator to provide GIS support.

Requires Bachelor’s degree in planning, engineering or science with GIS classwork, A Master’s Degree in planning or science is preferred. Certified AICP or ability to obtain certification within two years, GIS Certification

Information Technology Technician


Northampton County is accepting applications for a full time IT Technician in the Information Technology Department.  The essential function of this position is to assist in the daily operations of the Department, including but not limited to: systems administration, website management, application administration, network administration and providing technical support for all county departments. Familiarity with the following systems will be advantageous:


Website development/management software, Cisco VoIP Systems, Cisco IOS, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Server and Desktop Operating Systems, Microsoft Exchange Server, VMWare ESXi


Successful candidates should possess the following traits:  Proven experience as IT Technician or relevant position.  Excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills. In depth understanding of diverse computer systems and networks. Knowledge of internet security and data privacy principles.
The ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to a varied audience.  Strong sense of discretion and confidentiality.  Strong organizational and time-management skills.  Ability to meet deadlines and manage stress effectively in high-pressure situations.  Experience with LAN/WAN networks.  Experience with website development/management

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT FOR THE COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FOR NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA

The Northampton County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office is accepting applications for the full-time position of Administrative Assistant. Primary responsibilities include assisting the Commonwealth’s Attorney and Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney with all criminal cases prosecuted, setting the docket for Circuit Court, compiling reports for the Compensation Board, running the office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney by opening new cases, answering telephone calls from attorneys, witnesses and law enforcement, completing annual budgets for the county and the Compensation Board and working closely with the General District Court, the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and the Circuit Court. Maintenance Worker

The County of Northampton is accepting applications for a (part time) Maintenance Worker in its Public Works & Operations Department.
The selected candidate will maintain all County facilities and the essential function of this position is to maintain grounds including mowing/ trimming, weeding, planting shrubs and plants, picking up debris and trash and perform repairs and maintenance work as assigned. A valid Virginia drivers’ license is required. The hourly rate for this position is 11.86 / hour.

POSITION VACANCY

The County of Northampton is accepting applications for a County Administrator. A bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field is required, a master’s degree highly desirable. A minimum of five years of public-management experience as chief administrative officer or in a responsible local-government position required. Past experience of the individual must demonstrate familiarity in areas that include planning, public administration, finance, human-resources management and public relations.
