How do I apply for a vacancy?

A separate Northampton County application is required for each announced vacancy by 5 p.m. on the deadline date. Position title and department location must be written on each application. Resumes cannot substitute the Northampton County Employment Application.

9-1-1 Communications Officer

The Eastern Shore of Virginia 9-1-1 Commission is now accepting applications for 9-1-1 Communications Officers for immediate part-time openings and potentially for future full-time openings. The qualified applicant will work rotating shifts, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, as well as fill in shifts as needed. Communications Officers are responsible for answering 9-1-1 calls, verifying the callback number and address of the emergency, determining the nature of the emergency and transferring the call or dispatching the appropriate emergency response unit as required, as well as other associated duties.

Minimum qualifications are a high school diploma or equivalent, including some experience in keyboarding or typing. Applicants must be able to speak clearly and distinctly, understand and follow detailed directions, act quickly and effectively during emergencies, and operate complex telecommunications equipment. Desirable qualifications include two years experience in law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical services, and/or public safety dispatching. Applicants selected for employment will be subject to a criminal history background investigation and drug screening.

Emergency Medical Technician

Northampton County is accepting applications for Full time Emergency Medical Technician seeking to fill position with certified Intermediate / Paramedic certifications in the Emergency Medical Services Department.

Applicant must possess the following: Commonwealth of Virginia- Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician certification, CPR, valid VA. Driver’s License with good driving record, Emergency Vehicle Operators Course, Hazardous Materials Awareness. Criminal Background checks are a requirement with this position.

Correctional Officer

Job will require shift work, nights, weekends and some holidays. Qualifications: over the age of 21 and have obtained high school diploma or GED. Certifications must be obtained within one year of employment.

Senior Zoning Administrator
Northampton County, Virginia

The essential function of this position is to enforce zoning ordinances.  The position is responsible for knowledge and enforcement of County zoning ordinances, related inspections, and preparing reports.  The position works under the Director of Planning, Permitting & Enforcement. 

Supervises inspections for compliance with County zoning ordinances; resolves non-compliance issues, and / or issues citations to violators; supervises follow-up inspections to ensure implementation of corrective measures.  Supervises the Current Planner position jointly with Senior Planner.   Accepts and review applications for zoning permits.  Responsible for issuing plan approval and permits specific to the codes and programs the Zoning Administrator administers.  These include site plan approvals, waiver approvals, mitigation plan approvals, WQIA approvals, zoning clearances, land disturbance permits and wetlands permits.  Provides information and discusses regulations with property owners, business owners, contractors and the general public.  Please see complete job description in the link below.

Requirements: At least 2 years’ experience as a Zoning Administrator. Open until position is filled.

Excellent communication skills are essential.  The minimum salary for this position is $52,315.47 plus benefits.
