The staff of the Northampton County Treasurer’s Office is working diligently to process all tax payments which were due by Monday, December 6, 2021. If your payment is postmarked on or before December 6th, there will be no late fee assessed. The payments have to be processed manually this year rather than through the bank lockbox; this accounts for the reason why your check may not have cleared as promptly as in the past. Please do not stop payment on your check. This may result in a “bad check charge” if your original payment is then processed.

Be assured that staff is working to process your payment as quickly as possible while serving customers in-person and by phone. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.

Cynthia Bradford, County Treasurer

In an effort to help taxpayers to pay for their taxes before the December 5th deadline and not accrue penalty and interest after the due date, we would like to make sure you are aware of the PREPAID option.

You can begin paying Real Estate taxes starting January of the current year. You can pay any amount you wish at any time that is convenient for you.

In October you will receive an updated amount due or paid receipts showing a zero balance. You will need to have the following information included with your check and you will receive a receipt with every transaction.

RPC# (Parcel Code) or Physical Address and note PREPAID RE in memo line of check

Payments for Real Estate and Personal Property taxes can be made at Official Payments website

Due to COVID-19, DMV stops may require the full 24 hours to be released. We will process in the most timely fashion as possible.

**Please Note:

General Information

Since 1870, the Virginia Constitution has required that the post of Treasurer be an elected office. The Treasurer of the County is responsible for collecting revenues in the form of taxes and fees. These revenues include:

  • Real estate taxes
  • Personal property taxes
  • License taxes
  • Permit fees
  • State income taxes
  • Court, sheriff and clerk fees

The Treasurer is responsible for maintaining and reconciling the county bank accounts. The Treasurer receives funds from building and zoning fees, transient occupancy taxes, food and beverage taxes, sheriff fees, and fees from the courts.

The Treasurer records manual journal entries for all state funds, all accounts payable and payroll checks from the school system and for all outgoing vouchers from the Department of Social Services.

The Treasurer also manages the investment of local funds and maintains the county's financial records in conjunction with the finance department.
