Updates From Northampton County Department of Social Services
Posted on 03/18/2020

Dear DSS Customers and Partners:

We would like to provide a brief update to make you aware that we are working with the county's Office of Emergency Management to protect our staff and the individuals we serve during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The health and welfare of our customers and staff is our top priority. Effective March 20, we will continue to operate under normal business hours but will be closed to the public
except for emergency cases that cannot be handled by alternative methods and require a face-to-face visit. We will make you aware of any substantial updates by radio (WESR) and the County website.

What Staff is doing?

• Following CDC recommendations needed to prevent the spreading of germs

• Increasing sanitation of workstations and frequently touched surfaces

• Conducting telework as service and programs allow preventing and minimizing any disruption of benefits & services to eligible customers in Northampton Co.

• Continuing to conduct daily intake to address emergency cases as they arise

• Staying in close contact with Foster Parents and youth in Fostering Futures and vulnerable adults and their caregivers

What We Want Customers and Partners to know and/or do:

• Public Benefits: Online applications are accepted at CoverVA.org
Medicaid Only- 1-800-242- 8282. You can call the Enterprise Service Center at 1-855-635-4370 to apply for SNAP, formerly known as "food stamps" and Medicaid.

• We encourage all of our partners to apply on line or by calling the numbers listed above.

• Paper applications or other requested documents may be dropped off in the drop box in front of Social Services. Drop boxes will be checked daily, even in the event that the office may be closed to the public or on a modified schedule.

• The Agency will continue to respond to emergency cases and be available to answer questions and provide case management during normal office hours.

• Child/Adult Protective Services is operational 24/7. To report suspected incidents of abuse or neglect call the agency at (757) 678-5153 Monday through Friday during business hours, or the state hotline at 800-552-7096 after hours and weekends or the Sheriff's Department at (757) 678- 0458.

• Northampton FAPT meetings will be virtual for families and case managers.

The CSA Coordinator will contact case managers.

• Call us with any questions or concerns.
• Call the Agency to determine if a face-to-face visit is necessary.

We will be asking screening questions, even in emergency cases, before a face to face will be granted to individuals in our offices or in the community.

If a home visit is necessary:

• If possible, we will call ahead.
• If we are able to make a visit, we will be asking you for a place where staff can wash their hands upon entering and leaving the home.

We understand that these are challenging times, and we appreciate your cooperation and support. We cannot stress enough the importance of preventing the spread of germs and respiratory diseases by washing your hands often with soap and water; avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth; covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing; avoiding contact with people who
are sick; and staying home while sick, avoiding close contact with others.

We are in this together, and we appreciate your partnership and
