Northampton County has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to improve the accuracy of our 911 addressing system.
Over the coming months, County staff will review addresses, road signs, and related Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data throughout the County to ensure emergency responders, postal services, and other agencies have accurate location information.
Property owners should verify the following:
- That their address aligns with what is shown on the County's online GIS map and report any discrepancies; and
- That their address numbers are clearly posted and visible in accordance with Northampton County Code 150.28 Street Address Numbers.

If staff identify an address that is missing or improperly displayed, the property owner will first receive a Notice to Comply with time to correct the issue before any enforcement action is considered. Assistance may be available for residents who are unable to install address numbers due to financial or physical limitations.
The County will also review addresses that may be inaccurate or no longer logically assigned because of subdivisions, changes in access, or other circumstances. These situations will be evaluated individually in coordination with emergency management and mapping agencies.
As part of the grant, Northampton County will provide quarterly public updates on the project's progress, including maps and statistics.
