Attention Scam Alert

ATTENTION!! SCAM ALERT!!

Scammers are targeting developers and homeowners with active land-use permits by sending fake invoices for public hearing fees. These fraudulent emails and letters appear legitimate, often using public information, correct project names, and government logos to demand immediate payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or apps, sometimes totaling thousands.

HOW IT WORKS:

Use of Public Information: Criminals gather active permit application data from public government records to make the scam look legitimate.

Convincing Tactics: Scammers use correct addresses, case numbers, and the names of local officials in their communications.

Urgency and Pressure: The emails often threaten project delays, cancellation of hearings, or fines if payment is not made immediately.

Non-Government Emails: Often, the emails originate from fake, non-government domains, such as "@usa.com" instead of legitimate County government domains: @co.northampton.va.us.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF:

Verify Directly: If you receive a request, call the Northampton County Planning, Permitting & Enforcement department directly using a number from our official website 757-678-0443, not the number in the email.

Check Email Domains: Carefully check the sender's email address to ensure it ends in the official Northampton County domain, @co.northampton.va.us.

No Urgent Wire Transfers: Government agencies do not request payments via wire transfer, prepaid cards, or apps like Venmo.

Report It: If you receive a suspicious email, report it to the Northampton County Sheriff's Office 757-678-0460 and the Planning, Permitting & Enforcement department 757-678-0443.
